The role of art in recent waves of protest sets the stage for this exploration of the history of protest art, with a particular focus on local activism in New York and Connecticut in the 1960s. From the revolutionary art of the “heroic avant-garde” in the early 20th century to the creative tumult of “guerilla theater,” the Black Panthers, and New Haven’s May Day 1970—what can be learned from this history? Discover why art has been so central in the struggle for social justice, explore some of the tactics and strategies of art as protest, and some of the challenges and controversies surrounding this art.
