Meet John Gould Jennings (1811-1890). John was the 2nd child of Captain Abraham Gould Jennings. In 1821, at age 10, John joined his father on a trip to sail to China. During this trip, John fell off the ship into the water and had to be rescued. John’s father arranged to have this portrait painted as a memento of their voyage. It may have been painted by a Chinese artist named Foiequa.
This painting of the William Chamberlain clipper ship was painted by John’s brother, Isaac Jennings, in 1855.
This nautical compass, circa 1810-1820 was owned by Capt. Abraham Gould Jennings, then by his son Isaac Jennings.
This large mural was painted by Robert Lambdin in the 1940s. Titled "Old Black Rock Harbor About 1810," the scene shows what it may have looked like to work in the shipping industry at that time.
