Building an American Voice

September 14, 2024 — June 22, 2025

Since the nation’s founding, there have been fierce debates regarding which members of society had access to the “unalienable rights” of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” articulated in the Declaration of Independence. In the centuries after American began its democratic experiment, not every voice has been heard. This exhibition explores moments in local and national history that highlight how people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures took action to advocate for social justice, fought for civil rights, and often succeeded in enacting change.
