History Bites | The Fairfield Women who Founded the Connecticut Audubon Society 125 Years Ago

The year was 1898, 125 years ago. Mrs. Harriet D.C. Glover described it simply, “A score of ladies met in Fairfield on January 28, 1898, and formed the Audubon Society of the State of Connecticut.” They met at the Old Post Road home of another Mrs. Glover — Helen Wardwell Glover — determined to be part of a bird protection movement that was growing across the country. They included the two Mrs. Glovers, Mrs. Dora Wheeler, Mrs. Child, Miss Emma Wakeman, Mrs. Emily P. Knapp, and the most well-known, Mrs. Mabel Osgood Wright. This is the story of who they were, what they did, why they did it, and how their legacy carries on 125 years later.
