Image Reproductions

The Fairfield Museum and History Center offers scanning services for materials that cannot be photocopied due to age, condition, or uniqueness of the item.

Order a photo or scan from the Fairfield Museum Research LibraryAmong the materials that may be scanned are volumes printed before 1920, fragile items regardless of age, as well as all Special Collections items including manuscripts and church books, photographs, and maps, among others.

Scanning services are conducted in-house only. We do not allow personal scanners, but you may use your phone to take photographs.

Items are scanned at original size and have a resolution of 200 dpi for fair use requests, and 300 dpi for commercial use requests. Scans are delivered via email or an online file-sharing service in TIFF or JPEG format.

Policies

The collections of the Fairfield Museum and History Center (FMHC) are the sole and exclusive copyright of the Museum, and may not be duplicated, replicated, copied, scanned, printed, published, or otherwise reproduced without the specific prior written permission of the Museum. For these purposes, please use this document “Application for Permission to Reproduce Images.” Permission to reproduce or otherwise use any image from the collection of the FMHC is contingent upon the acceptance of the following conditions and is automatically abrogated if any part is infringed.

1. Reproduction is permitted only from materials originally supplied by the FMHC. Permission to reproduce an image from the collection of the FMHC may not be reused, transferred, assigned, or sold without the permission of the Museum.

2. Permission may be granted only upon receipt in advance of the full particulars concerning their publication, including authorship, ownership of copyright, format, medium, publisher, and anticipated date of publication, broadcast, or transmission.

3. Rights to reproduce FMHC images are non-exclusive and granted for one-time use only. Any further revisions, editions, and reprints require a new application to be submitted.

4. Each image must be reproduced in its entirety and without alteration or cropping unless otherwise approved in writing by FMHC. Any such approved image must be labeled as “detail.”

5. One “best version” hard copy of any resulting publication, and two “best version” copies of each resulting promotional publication in which the FMHC images appear, shall be sent to the FMHC, without charge, immediately upon publication.

6. Each individual image from the FMHC shall be duly and properly acknowledged and credited. Failure to comply is a violation of copyright.

7. If requested, proofs must be submitted to the FMHC for approval prior to publication. The Museum reserves the right to deny reproduction if proofs are judged unsatisfactory.

8. The FMHC reserves the right to withhold permission for any use judged to be incompatible with the mission and values of the Museum.

9. Permission is valid only after all fees have been paid.

NOTICE: WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
